Political Questions Follow New Hillsdale Hire

HILLSDALE, N.Y. -- A Borough Council majority has given its blessing, by a 5-2 vote, to the borough administrator's hiring of a part-time clerk whose political affiliations were questioned by the two dissenters, northjersey.com reports.

Administrator Susan Witkowski on July 6 appointed Gioia Cassidy -- a political worker who has been associated with campaigns of U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman, Ridgewood mayor and former Congressional candidate Paul Aronsohn, former U.S. Senator Bob Torricelli and former Congressman Bill Orton, according to the website.

Northjersey.com says that Council President Frank Pizzella and Councilman John Ruocco expressed concern that Cassidy’s political ties could affect her performance in what should be a non-partisan position. They said that Cassidy, who also is currently working with Friends of Tom Byrne, was hired without their knowledge.

The borough administrator in Hillsdale has the authority to hire and fire staff, northjersey.com reported.
