WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A stretch of Washington Avenue in Washington Township was expected to remain closed for several hours Wednesday after a broken tree branch snagged a power line, igniting a fire.

"It took out the wire and the trees went up," Fire Department Battalion Chief Dave Hayes told Daily Voice.

Firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes.

They were awaiting a PSE&G crew.

"We can't put out the pockets because of the two-way electrical feed," Hayes said just before 4:30 p.m. "The wires are still live."
