PARK RIDGE, N.J. -- James McWilliams, 89, of Park Ridge, died Thursday, Sept. 8. He was 89.
He was born in Scranton, Pa. and attended Stuyvesant High School, where he ran track.
McWilliams was drafted into the U.S. Army immediately after graduation in 1945. He proudly served as a military policeman during the Nuremberg Trials for Nazi war criminals that were instrumental in the slaughter of millions.
After returning from Germany, he attended College at the University of Alaska and The College of Idaho, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He earned his master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He continued his education with additional graduate work in math and science, earning him grants from the National Science Foundation on several occasions.
McWilliams was a middle school, high school and college educator for 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 153 in Park Ridge.
He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice; and brothers, Robert and Thomas McWilliams.
He is survived by his children, Ted McWilliams and his wife Sandy, Lisa McWilliams, Tim McWilliams and his wife Jeanine and Chris McWilliams and his wife Kim; and grandchildren, Maggie, Katie, Lizzie, Chris, Kevin and Tim.
There will be a memorial service from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Robert Spearing Funeral Home Inc., 155 Kinderkamack Road, Park Ridge.
