The petition was in favor of bringing the bond to a ballot and required at least 461 signatures from people who voted in the 2013 general election. Votes will be validated on Oct. 29 by the township clerk Elaine Erlewein.
If they are, there will either be a special election in 90 days just for this matter — costing between $15,000 and $20,000 in municipal money — or it will be included in the 2016 general election at no cost, Councilman Steven Cascio told Daily Voice.
“The field has been in some state of disrepair and it needs to be addressed,” said Cascio, who grew up playing on the field. “If 51% of taxpayers want it, do it. If 51% don’t want it, then don’t do it.”
Either way, Cascio said, the decision should be made by the taxpayers, “not six individuals on a council.”
Many of the taxpayers would rather spend the money on township essentials such as new intersections, a firehouse or a municipal garage, which the councilman said are all things that Washington Township needs.
“They just don’t want to spend money on something that’s a luxury item,” he said. “Roads are essential, a fire house is essential for safety… a football field for that type of money is a nonessential project.”
