Dill and Pickles — who need to be adopted as a pair — were among the 52 dogs recovered from a Lincoln Boulevard house near Fourth Avenue that authorities said was in "horrific conditions" (SEE: Dogs, cats, parakeets, lizard among nearly 80 live, dead animals removed from Westwood home).
Bergen County Animal Control officials couldn't get near Dill, a 2-year-old male, and Pickles, a 7-year-old female, without them shutting down in fear when they first arrived at the shelter, officials said.
"Although Dill was unsure, his curiosity got the better of him and was more willing to investigate the [staff] sitting in his kennel," the BCAC said in a Facebook post. "Pickles was huddled in a corner in another kennel, not courageous enough to look out into the overwhelming new world she was placed in."
By pairing the two, Dill was able to teach Pickle how to trust and open up within weeks. Both dogs have grown leaps and bounds and thrive in social situations with people, officials said.
BCAC is looking for a calm and patient household that can accept both dogs and give them plenty of time to adapt.
