A pavilion being built on the property will be named after him.
Fyfe was presented with a plaque — a picture of The Mayor Fyfe Pavilion — at a celebration honoring his devotion to Montvale on Thursday night.
Project Developer Peter Hekemian told Fyfe that he was coming in all the way from California because he had an oil rendition of the finished product to give to him.
It turned out that wasn't the case at all. The developer was coming in for the announcement of the pavilion.
"I thought it was a joke at first," the former mayor told Daily Voice.
"You could have knocked me over with a feather when [Project Developer] Peter Hekemian] made the presentation.
"I'm not often speechless but I'm sure my mouth was hanging wide open," he said.
The approximately 5-year DePiero Farm project was a point of contention in Montvale, Fyfe said, and the first year was "not all that friendly."
Eventually, everyone learned to work together.
"For all I know it's why I lost the election, but I still believe strongly that it was the best use of that property," he said. "The right thing is not always the most popular thing."
