"We need to get as many signatures as possible during this short window of time to further support our application,” said Emerson Mayor Lou Lamatina.
So far, he added, 22 letters are confirmed and about 20 more are promised.
Grants that get significant support from the public will receive an additional 20 points in the approval process, according to the mayor.
The Kinderkamack Road Improvement Project, which started in September and is expected to last 10 months, already includes upgrades from Lincoln Boulevard to Etna Avenue.
The new grant, which could be funded up to $800,000, would do likewise for all establishments along the Kinderkamack Road corridor in Emerson.
The goal is to have the entire business district improved, Lamatina wrote in a Facebook post urging public participation.
Those interested should email Lamatina at mayor@emersonnj.org. He will email back a copy of the letter of support that can be printed out and signed.
Alternately, people can come to Borough Hall and ask for Borough Administrator Robert S. Hoffmann or Borough Clerk Jane Dietsch from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.
