WESTWOOD, N.J. — A local Girl Scout troop is working toward its Silver Award by protecting the environment while supporting a nonprofit organization for single mothers coming to Westwood.

Girl Scout Troop 94312 is raising money to landscape New Hope, Inc.'s Third Avenue location with a new sign made from recycled materials and a xeriscape garden.

"The project we are doing for New Hope is part of the same environmental awareness/beautification project for the town of Westwood," troop leader Pat McKenna said.

The Girl Scouts launched their efforts toward the Silver Award last year when they made and hung posters around town that campaigned for clean water — the second public opinion question on last year's ballot.

The girls have raised $525 as of Nov. 16 on their GoFundMe page.

"This project means a lot to us," the girls wrote on their page, "because we are asking for help for other girls who are not as fortunate as we are."
