For A Healthier Mind And Body, Break A Sweat Says The Valley Hospital

We've all heard that exercise is good for overall health, but what most people don't realize is that working out can actually serve as effective preventative medicine.

"If you are one of the 56 percent of American adults who don't meet the recommendations for sufficient physical activity, you are putting yourself at an increased risk for a variety of serious and potentially life-threatening health issues," said Don Tomaszewski, director of the Sports Institute, Medical Fitness and Outpatient Rehabilitation Medicine at The Valley Hospital.

No matter one’s age, regular physical activity and healthy eating can provide a wealth of physical benefits. "Exercising is an essential tool that contributes to managing weight, building lean muscle, reducing fat, strengthening bones and joints and lowering the risk of obesity," said Tomaszewski. Working out can also decrease one's risk of developing heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer's, as well as increase stamina and the ability to sleep. Additionally, breaking a sweat provides numerous mental and emotional benefits including decreased feelings of depression or anxiety and improved mood and focus.

"By getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise at least three days a week, you can make a positive impact on both your physical and emotional health," said Tomaszewski.

For those looking to live a more physically fit lifestyle, the safest and most effective way to get in shape is to partner with a trained fitness professional and create a personalized fitness plan. It is also equally important to choose a fitness facility that will support and guide participants to reach their health and fitness goals.

One such venue is Valley Health System’s new Center for Health and Wellness, which is slated to open in early 2018. "This facility combines outpatient medical and rehabilitation services with LifeStyles, a world-class fitness center," said Tomaszewski. "This integrated campus will offer a healthcare hub for diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive services in one convenient location."

The Center for Health and Wellness is located at 1400 MacArthur Boulevard in Mahwah. For more information please, call 201-389-0839.
