The couple first fell in love with St. Thomas on their honeymoon in 1969 and since then knew they eventually wanted to make some sort of investment there.
In 1986, the Ragos knew the time was right and purchased Pineapple Village Villas in St. Thomas.
“Teachers make wonderful sales people because they’re always selling their subjects to students,” said Rose Rago, who taught in the Closter Public Schools system. “Becoming people renting accommodations was almost natural.”
The sunny skies and tropical weather didn’t hurt either, she said.
All of Pineapple Village Villa’s homes are single-level, air-conditioned homes with a full bath, private garden, outdoor patio, fully-equipped kitchen and a master suite.
The Ragos miss their friends and family in New Jersey, but they’ve made new ones on the island.
“We’ve met people coming to visit and have kept in touch with them,” said Rose. “Now that we’ve gotten older, we’re seen people bring down their children, who bring their children. We’ve developed relationships with generations.”
The Buscios of Bayville, New Jersey have been visiting Pineapple Village at least once a year for 25 years.
“The Ragos know everyone and even the merchants know their names,” said Tony Buscio, who has celebrated several birthdays in St. Thomas with Rose and Bill Rago.
“They take the guess-work out of vacationing — they’re just nice people to be with.”
