Lightning Strike Causes Fire At Turtle Back Zoo, Officials Say
A North Jersey zoo erupted in flames after being struck by lightning on Wednesday, Aug. 28, officials said. West Orange responders got a call from the Turtle Back Zoo saying its Sea Turtle Recovery Building had been struck by lightning around 9:45 p.m., a spokesperson for the town said. Firefighters and police officers responded and put out the blaze. Essex County Sherriff officers were on scene as well.

Child Feeding Stingrays Bitten By Shark At Turtle Back Zoo: Report
A child was bitten by a shark while feeding stingrays over the weekend at Turtle Back Zoo, RLS Media reports. When a 12-year-old girl was feeding the rays, which are in a tank with epaulette sharks, the outlet says citing county officials. That's when one of the sharks apparently bit the girl's finger. She was not seriously hurt, though, and the wound was treated with antibacterial cream and a bandage, according to the outlet. Click here for the full story from RLS Media.

Turtle Back Zoo Welcomes Endangered Leopard Cub Nadya
No, this isn't "Tiger King," -- it's better. The Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange welcome a female Amur leopard cub Nadya on Friday, March 13, to mom Annika and dad Valeri. Her name means "filled with hope" in Russian. "Nadya’s birth has great importance since her species is classified as critically endangered," according to the zoo, noting that there are estimated to be about 84 Amur leopards in their native habitat. Lion At Turtle Back Zoo In West Orange Dies: Report
One of three lions at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange died last month, Patch reported. The female lion was being treated for a gastrointestinal disorder, but her condition worsened. She died July 19. "The lion was under veterinary treatment and received full medical care," Mike Kerr , the zoo's director, told Patch. "The lion underwent a physical exam, blood work, ultrasound, radiographs and supportive care." The other lions are in good condition, Kerr also said. A teen driver has been charged in connection with a Fredon crash that killed a 17-year-old female passenger, NJ.com reports. A 17-year-old Newton High School student was returning from the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange the day after prom when the rental car she was riding in overturned, killing her and injuring two other teens.
