NJ Student Hospitalized After 'Blackout Challenge' A student at an Essex County middle school was hospitalized on Tuesday, April 16, after he tried the "blackout challenge." Two students at South Orange Middle School took part in the dangerous stunt, popular on social media, which involves holding one's breath to the point of passing out, Lynn Irby Hill, the principal, said in a letter to parents. The first student passed out but was treated by the nursing staff, Irby Hill said. Property Owner From Wayne Charged In Sussex County House Fire That Killed Teen Girl The 48-year-old owner of a Sussex County home was charged in connection to a fire that caused the death a 13-year-old girl at the property last month, authorities announced. Walter Biller, of Wayne, failed to obtain or file for proper occupancy and fire safety-related documentation before completing the lease agreement with the Davenport family in 2019, Franklin Borough police said. Therefor, he was charged in the March 19 fire at the Nestor Street home, in which 13-year-old Heaven Davenport died, authorities said. Owners Of Guttenberg Home Where Woman Was Critically Burned Arrested A multifamily home in Guttenberg where a woman suffered critical injuries in a fire had three illegal apartments, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.  The owners of the building at 67 70th St. -- Jose Puma, 49, and his wife Maria, 50 -- were arrested Wednesday. Jose Puma has been charged with insurance fraud and violating of law intended to protect public health and safety. Maria Puma was also charged with the latter offense.  They are scheduled to appear in court Monday.  The fire broke out May 20 and left a woman, 26, with severe burns. The woman is in critica…

330-Gallon Acid Spill Sends Sewer Plant Worker, Police Officer To Hospital A Parsippany sewer plant worker and responding police officer were hospitalized following a chemical spill Thursday, authorities said. Peroxyacetic acid -- which is highly corrosive -- leaked from a faulty valve on a 330-gallon storage container at the Edwards Road facility around 2 p.m., Parsippany Police Sgt. Brian Conover said.
