Tooth Extraction Lands North Jersey Trainer On Ventilator
One day, Johnny Gouvanis is getting a tooth extracted. The next, he was in the hospital on a ventilator. The personal trainer from North Jersey suffered an infection after having a tooth extracted on July 28, and was put on antibiotics and then the ventilator to protect his airways. Doctors worried the size and swelling of the infection would affect his breathing. Gouvanis hadn't been able to talk until Monday, Aug. 8, when he recorded a YouTube video from Mount Sinai Hospital thanking everyone supporting him. Johnny says thank you.GoFundMe Campaign Update More than $19,700 had be…

Montvale Mom Who Produced 'Little Steven's Underground Garage' Passes At 36
TRIBUTE: When loved ones say their final goodbyes to Jenna Antonacci of Montvale on Friday, they will no doubt recall how much she loved -- and at one time lived -- music. Antonacci had worked in her mid- to late-20s as a producer for the wildly popular "Little Steven's Underground Garage," created by longtime E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt on Sirius XM. She immersed herself in communicating with bands, managers and labels to organize appearances, among other tasks, and worked directly on the program hosted by Andrew Loog Oldham, the former manager and producer for the Rolling St…

Butler Quadriplegic Stands Strong 18 Years After Freak Accident
Lauren LaPorta of Butler isn't even on the treadmill and she's already shaking. The 30-year-old had just hoisted herself out of her motorized wheelchair and ever-so slowly climbed the stairs up to the second level of Retro Fitness of Hackensack. All that was left for her to do was step onto the machine. Her legs are quivering. Her back is hunched. She doesn't know if she's going to make it this time. "I don't know what's wrong with me today," said LaPorta, several minutes into her second failed attempt at stepping onto the belt. Halfway there.Cecilia Levine While such a setback woul…

Bergen County Dad Left Job He Hated To Open Personal Training Biz -- And He's Killing It
Aaron Seaton was tired. And not in the fulfilling, gratifying kind of way. It was 2016 and he was working a job in architecture that took him to all corners of New York City, and then back home to New Jersey. After a better life, Seaton risked it all. He walked away from his stable career to open a personal training business, TailorMade Bodiez, with no guarantee of success. It's been two years since Seaton took the leap of faith, and his business is rapidly expanding across Bergen County, most recently to a newly-renovated studio in Englewood. And yeah, he's still tired -- especially wi…

A soon-to-be-married North Jersey couple is opening a brand new fitness center in West Milford. Justin Florio and Allison Barrett, who will tie the knot in February 2019, have opened Patience & Consistency (P&C) in the Newfoundland section of the township on Route 23. Taut Bodies, Shiny Trophies? Nice, But Not What Hawthorne Fitness Coach Is Really After
Hawthorne bodybuilding coach Guy Del Corso has too many success stories to put a number on. He's turned hopeless amateurs into thriving professionals and transformed terminal cancer patients into champion athletes. He even gave last year's Ms. Olympia the single piece of advice that changed the trajectory of her stunning career. The taut bodies and shiny trophies, however, are not all that the 62-year-old is after. That, he says, is more than skin-deep. "The most fulfilling thing is not about winning," said Del Corso, a retired champion bodybuilder and Mr. New Jersey 1988. "…

Ridgefield Park Stroke Survivor: Steroids Ruined My Life
For awhile, James Shanahan of Ridgefield Park was invincible. In the gym he was the strongest. The most disciplined. The hardest worker. Then suddenly he wasn't. Shanahan was 28 years old and weeks out from his first bodybuilding competition when he suffered a stroke that would change his life forever. Now, more than three years into recovery, he's sharing his story in hopes that others will think twice about using steroids. "I knew it was important to take care of your body but never thought steroids would cause a stroke," the 32-year-old personal trainer said. "Had I kno…

Englewood Firefighter Builds Smoking Hot Bodies In His New Gym
Tarrant Anderson of Englewood says fitness and firefighting go hand-in-hand. That's why he's doing both -- 50 yards away from each other. The Englewood firefighter and personal trainer last October opened his own gym The Fit Factory, LLC on S. Van Brunt Street, just down the block from the fire station. The common thread between Anderson's two jobs is that no matter which one he's working, he gets to do what he loves: Help people. "There's not a day that I hate my life or my job," said Anderson, 30, in his converted warehouse. "I'm truly blessed to be able to help people i…

College Dropout Worked At Paramus ShopRite Before Becoming Model
Adam Dubanowtiz catches a glimpse of his abs through the cut of his tank top in the mirror at his Hackensack gym and pauses. He paces toward himself admiring what he sees, but never for a second does he forget where he came from. Two years ago, the 27-year-old model lacked the confidence to even step foot in a gym and instead resorted to push-ups and pull-ups at home. Things have certainly come full circle for Dubanowtiz, who took second place in his class and fifth overall at an elite body building competition in April. He is currently prepping for another show this spring, but says ther…

Fit Cops: Hackensack Officer Proved Her Academy Class Wrong
HACKENSACK, N.J. — Neither getting in shape nor becoming a police officer came easy for Hackensack's special officer Emily Dubon. Dropping 40 pounds took as much work as proving to the other recruits in her state law enforcement class that she could indeed hold her own. Dubon, 21 of Englewood, ultimately lost the weight -- and finished at the top of her class for females in 2016, despite being the smallest. As she continues to work toward her goal of becoming a K9 officer in the sheriff's department, she motivates others as a personal trainer. "I really wanted to be a cop, and it’s h…
