NJ Beaches Were Among East Coast's Cleanest In 2024, New Study Shows
More than half of all East Coast beaches had potentially unsafe levels of fecal contamination at least once in 2024, according to researchers. The advocacy group Environment America released its new study about the water quality at US beaches on Monday, July 7. The nonprofit compiled bacteria testing data from states bordering oceans and the Great Lakes, along with Puerto Rico. From 3,187 beaches nationwide, Environment America found that more than three out of five (61%) had at least one day of potentially unsafe levels of fecal contamination in 2024. NJ Beach Town Looks To Close Beaches Early Due To Wild Teens, New Curfew Enacted
Those under 18 years old will need adult supervision after midnight in one New Jersey beach town. Wildwood this week passed a new ordinance that requires juveniles to be accompanied by a parent or guardian between midnight and 6 a.m. unless they're going to or coming from work or a local business. A proposed ordinance suggests closing beaches from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for everyone, in the interest of public safety. New Jersey's beaches and lakes will be open in time for Memorial Day Weekend, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday (story continues below poll).
