PARAMUS, N.J. – A weekend program to earn an associate degree is offered by Bergen Community College.

Students can complete an associate of science degree program in two years through classes taken exclusively on Saturdays, Sundays and online.

The program, “Weekend College at the Meadowlands,” will reside at the institution’s location in Lyndhurst, which opened in 2008. Students participating in the program will enroll in five classes each semester – four will take place in-person at the Meadowlands on weekends; the fifth will take place online over the length of the 15-week semester.

Each in-person class will meet three Saturdays and three Sundays 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., four consecutive three-week periods. The classes include online learning elements, making the courses a “hybrid” of both face-to-face and online modalities. Students will receive a one-week break between the four in-person classes.

The program also provides enrollees with the opportunity to learn as part of a cohort model, taking classes alongside the same students in every class, fostering cohesion.

“Increasing access to higher education remains a hallmark of community colleges,” Bergen President B. Kaye Walter, Ph.D., said. “Institutions must acknowledge the changing needs of their diverse student populations and that our students’ lives demand options and flexibility. With students working multiple jobs and managing familial responsibilities, learning can no longer occur in a vacuum, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. As the access point for education, community colleges have a responsibility to accommodate these needs.”

Weekend College at the Meadowlands will have a designated adviser available at the location for academic support and guidance.
