Under Trump's new Dreamer program, nearly 22,000 unauthorized immigrants in New Jersey who were brought to the U.S. as children would lose their protected status and face deportation, NJ.com says.
Obama's program allowed certain illegal immigrants who entered the country as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit.
In a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that DACA was not statutorily authorized and was therefore an unconstitutional exercise of discretion by the executive branch.
Sessions said DACA, given pending litigation, would likely face the same outcome as the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program.
Renewal applications for DACA Employment Authorization Documents properly filed and accepted by Oct. 5, 2017, for people whose current Employment Authorization Documents expire between today and March 5, 2018, will be processed. Any applications filed after Oct. 5 will not be accepted.
