Bergen Regional Medical Center Seeks To Expand Detox Unit

PARAMUS, N.J. -- Bergen Regional Medical Center wants state approval to add 10 beds to its alcohol and drug detoxification unit, NorthJersey.com reported.

The hospital informed county officials of the application less than a week after freeholders urged expanded services in response to a heroin-overdose epidemic throughout the region, NorthJersey.com reported. 

The demand for detox services has been “steady but not overwhelming” this year, hospital officials said, with a waiting list of no longer than a week, NorthJersey.com reported. The availability of detox services has taken a higher profile in wake of the steady increase of heroin overdose deaths, the story said.

In Bergen County, the number of deaths jumped from an average of 26 for 2011-13 to 42 in 2014, NorthJersey.com said.
