Witnesses say driver tried to flee crash when pickup flipped, killing him

UPDATE: A 30-year-old heavy construction machine operator from New York who was ejected from his Dodge Ram pickup and killed after it hit a divider on Route 17 was trying to flee another crash up the road, witnesses told Paramus police.

Witnesses told police the 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 was speeding on Route 17 South when it hit the back of a 2009 Nissan near the entrance to the Garden State Parkway.

The Nissan’s driver, a 25-year-old woman from Pomona, N.Y., wasn’t injured, they said.

The Dodge kept going before it smashed into a 1998 Infiniti, overturned and struck a cement column from the Century Road overpass.

Then it bounced off and rammed into the bank of a tanker truck in the center lane.

Both the driver of the Infinity, a 20-year-old Englewood man, and the 18-wheeler’s driver, a 53-year-old man from Ontario, Canada, weren’t injured.

The Dodge driver, identified as David Fulton of Woodridge, N.Y., was ejected and later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

Video taken at the scene and provided to CLIFFVIEW PILOT shows a yellow tarp covering the driver of the 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 on the highway barely 50 feet from the overturned pickup (CVP doesn’t publish such images). ebris stretched from Century Road all the way to Route 4 following the 9:50 p.m. crash next to the Century Road overpass, just north of the Route 4 interchange.

Police were contacted by the tanker driver, sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Paramus detectives the investigators with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Unit are awaiting the result of toxicology tests to determine whether Fulton was impaired.

Route 17 eventually was reopened in both directions at 4:15 this morning.
