The 119-pound bear, which had been wandering the area for days, shimmered up the tree on Stella Court as police approached around 9 a.m., Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.
The bear spent about three hours in the tree before state Fish and Wildlife tranquilized the animal.
Senior Tyco Animal Control Officer Carol Tyler suspects he may have a shoulder injury from being hit by a car.
"He has been getting close to humans," Tyler said "His normal behavior is not appropriate."
The bear will be transported to western New Jersey, where he'll be freed, Tyler said.
"The less intervention, the better," she said.
Officers Robert Sobocinski, Rich Paladino and Jon Umanzor and Lt. Tom Damato assisted.
