The Comptroller’s Office wants to review his “methodology” so that it can “provide recommendations and suggestions to other correctional facilities around the state,” Saudino said.
The Bergen jail holds both sentenced inmates and those awaiting trial in a combination of minimum, medium and maximum security settings, with the capacity of 1,250.
It has more than 280 corrections officers.
Over the last two years, Saudino said, more than 11,000 hours of overtime was eliminated, which he said has saved more than $700,000. Posts also have been consolidated “to create a more streamlined operation,” he said.
Two months ago, the jail received a passing grade from an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) inspection team for its work in housing immigration detainees, the sheriff noted.
The state Comptroller’s Office is responsible for auditing government finances, examining government contracts and reviewing the efficiency and performance of various state government programs.
“I welcome the Comptroller’s Office in reaching out to us,” said Saudino, who is running for re-election next month against former county Public Safety Director James Mordaga. “We look forward to meeting with them.”
