Roof ripped off tractor-trailer on Route 4 in Paramus

ONLY ON CVP: Authorities gave a 71-year-old tractor-trailer driver the benefit of the doubt after the roof of his rig was ripped off as it passed beneath a Route 4 overpass in Paramus late this morning.

The Bayville driver said he saw warnings signs on the westbound highway that the height of the Forest Avenue bridge up ahead was 13’10” in the outer lanes and 13’5″ in the middle.

The Freehold Cargage Inc. trailer was 13’6″.

“He thought it was high enough that he could fit through,” Deputy Police Chief Robert Guidetti told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He was off by an inch.”

The overpass sheered off the top like a tin can, leaving it behind the rig.

The state Department of Transportation was inspecting the span.

No summonses were issued.
