R.E.M.’s rich pageant ends

Their chiming Rickenbacker guitars, pulsing bass and oft-unintelligible vocals set the blueprint for ’80s college rock and much of the early ’90s alternative scene: Iconic rockers R.E.M. have broken up after three decades.

“As lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band,” the band officially announced Wednesday. “We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished.”

Through 15 studio albums and a slew of live records, videos and compilations, the band evolved from unknowns from Athens, Ga., to the top of the charts.
