Passaic County Sheriff's Officers Seize $500,000 In Heroin At Paramus Mall

PARAMUS, N.J. — A Bronx man was arrested carrying more than 13 pounds of pure heroin worth about $500,000 Friday at Garden State Plaza in Paramus, Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said Saturday morning.

Daniel A. Cespedes, 33, was charged with possession of heroin and intent to distribute, Berdnik said.

"This is a significant arrest and a large amount of narcotics were seized and taken off the streets of northern New Jersey," Berdnik said.

Detectives pulled over Cespedes during an undercover operation at the mall around 1:45 p.m. Friday, the sheriff said. Detectives saw Cespedes try to hide an orange tool-bag behind the front passenger seat and found heroin within it, he said.

Cespedes was held on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

The arrest followed a joint investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office and the Passaic County Sheriff's Office, Berdnik said.

The street value of the heroin could have ended up three times its $500,000 value once diluted and packaged individually, Berdnik said.
