The 43-year-old Bloomfield man had just been released from Bergen Regional Medical Center when bystanders called officers to Pascack Road near Highview Terrace just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Ehrenberg said.
The 6-foot-tall, 200-plus-pound man was bleeding from his arms, the chief said.
"While speaking to the officers, [he] pulled out a box cutter type knife and put it to his own throat while threatening to kill himself," Ehrenberg said. "He then used the knife to begin cutting his own forearms in a vertical manner."
Officers told him to drop the weapon after he threatened them with it, the chief said.
He, in turn, "stated to the police that they would have to shoot him," he said.
At that point, a Paramus Police Emergency Service Unit officer fired one hit from his Taser, Ehrenberg said.
The man fell backward over a guardrail and dropped the box cutter, he said.
Officers provided first aid and Paramus EMS returned him in good physical condition to BRMC, Ehrenberg said.
No charges were filed.
