Andrew Ishak, 28, remained in critical but stable condition at Hackensack University Medical Center, Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said early Tuesday evening.
Ishak was alone in a 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser that struck the center divider of the highway, crossed four lanes over traffic, rolled and wrapped itself around the sign pole near Midland Avenue, Ehrenberg said Monday.
Ishak was the same driver Paramus police pulled from a burning wreck on southbound Route 17 at Ridgewood Avenue last July 13, Ehrenberg said.
That crash occurred just after midnight after Ishak lost control of a 2015 Nissan Altima that left the roadway and struck a utility pole the chief said.
The vehicle rolled over onto its roof and caught fire, he said.
Borough Officers Gil Maynard, Anthony Mordaga and Timothy Reed, extinguished the fire, broke the side windows of the car and pulled the dazed Ishak out, Ehrenberg said.
He was taken to HUMC with "moderate injuries including lacerations and abrasions," he said.
When the pole and attached electric lines came down, some of the poles guy-wires, snapped and broke the front window of the “Lighting Superstore,” the chief said.
In Sunday's wreck, members of the Paramus Rescue Squad and Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to remove Ishak.
