Alerted by security at the Lord & Taylor store, Officer Keith Bland spotted the pair.
A woman identified as Tyairie Green, 22, assaulted Bland, temporarily allowing her partner, 25-year-old Anthony Battle to bolt, Ehrenberg said.
Lt. Barbara Steinberg helped arrest Greene, who continued fighting, the acting chief said.
At the samet time, Officer Alan Alvarez spotted Battle in the parking lot and chased him down.
Bland was treated for cuts on his face, Ehrenberg said.
Green was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property, stolen credit cards and a small amount of marijuana.
Battle, meanwhile, was charges with resisting, eluding and similar possession offenses. He was being held on $15,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, and Greene on $20,000.
An April 10 Municipal Court hearing was scheduled.
