Two men on a motorcycle pulled up to the 33-year-old Paramus victim as he walked home along Pascack Road near Oradell Avenue just after 10 p.m., Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.
One got off and got into a fight with him just after 10 p.m., he said.
“During the fight the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired several times, hitting [the victim] at least one time in the chest,” the chief said.
Police believe a semiautomatic handgun was used.
Both men then fled, and the victim ran several blocks to his home, as CLIFFVIEW PILOT exclusively reported earlier. Family members then drove him to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, where he was listed in stable condition, Ehrenberg said.
The car that brought him to the hospital was nearly pressed against the ER door.
Several Ridgewood police officers responded to the hospital and quickly alerted their Paramus colleagues, CLIFFVIEW PILOT learned.
Searching area sidewalks, gutters and drains for the weapon, Paramus police found several shell casings, the chief said. Just after midnight, they closed Pascack Road in both directions between Oradell Avenue and Standish Road as the search continued.
