Several pedestrians on the south walkway of the bridge called Port Authority Police around 10:30 p.m., saying that they saw an apparently agitated woman walking around.
A short time later, they said, they passed the spot where they’d seen her and found clothing, a cellphone and a pocketbook.
“There are no confirmed witnesses of someone jumping,” Steve Coleman of the Port Authority told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning. “It’s all circumstantial evidence right now.”
Authority police notified the New York City Harbor Patrol, which was searching the river this morning, Coleman said.
Then, at 3:40 a.m., an officer grabbed a 63-year-old Flushing man who got past the locked gates and threatened to jump from the north walkway.
He was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus for a psychiatric evaluation, Coleman said.
A report of a third jumper apparently proved unfounded, he added.
