The victim's identity has not been revealed but Capt. William Wicker confirmed he or she was a resident of the home.

A fire started in the garage of the house, located a block away from River Dell High School, around 9:50 a.m., Wicker said.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation but was not believed to be suspicious, the captain said.

Four other people were displaced from the fire, Wicker said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Arson Investigations Squad, the sheriff's office, borough police and fire, and the New Milford Fire Department responded to the fire.

It was out in under an hour.

A neighbor, who declined to give his name, said the victim was a close friend of his and called him "a man of integrity."

"He was the greatest man around," another neighbor said of the victim.
