The 61-year-old driver was clearly having a medical issue when troopers from the Bloomfield barracks got the call around 11 a.m., NJSP Sgt. Adam Grossman told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
They caught up to his Mercury Monarch soon after, Grossman said.
“He was driving at very low speed, somewhere under 30 miles an hour or so, on three tires and a rim,” the sergeant said. “He also wasn’t responsive.”
As the troopers followed, trying to get the driver’s attention, his car went off the roadway twice, hitting the guardrail both times, Grossman said.
Having traveled nearly seven miles at this point, five-year veteran Trooper Jason Wiswesser pulled his vehicle in front of the disoriented man’s sedan and brought it to a stop in Paramus near Route 17, the sergeant said.
“There was a slight impact to the troop car,” he said. “Nothing serious.”
The driver, identified as Jean Jules of Orange, was taken to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood by the Paramus Ambulance Corps.
Early reports were that Jules had suffered from some type of neurological issue but appeared to be doing OK, Grossman said.
