Home invasion goes awry: Looks like they hit the wrong house

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A trio of home invaders apparently hit the wrong address when they burst into a New Milford apartment looking for drugs. They left empty-handed, but not before frightening the couple who lives there, Police Chief Frank Papapietro told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Sometime after 6:30 tonight, the couple heard someone trying to remove the air conditioner at the Brookchester Apartments on the Boulevard.

“When they opened the door to see what was going on, three males rushed into the apartment,” the chief said.

After “putting up a bit of a struggle,“ the woman was shoved to the floor, he said. The man had his shirt pulled over his head before he was forced to join her.

“He said they put something sharp against his throat,” Papapietro told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“They they ransacked the apartment, claiming they were looking for drugs,” the chief said. When they didn’t find any, they left. “We don’t know if they stole anything,” he said.

“Our theory at this point is that they hit the wrong apartment.”

Immediately on the scene were police from Bergenfield, Teaneck and Oradell, along with Bergen County Police and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which was still combing the apartment at 8:30 tonight for traces of the intruders.

Descriptions of the three weren’t very specific, Papapietro said.
