The girl told police the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. in the area of Ridgewood Avenue and Stevens Court, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.

The girl told them the driver never spoke to her and didn't get out of the vehicle, the chief said.

She said she "immediately ran home and notified police," he said.

The girl described the car as a 2-door, Navy blue newer model with tinted windows.

The driver, she said, was white, about 30 years old, with "spiky" black hair and glasses.

Anyone who was in the area and might have seen something to help the investigaiton is asked to call Paramus police: (201) 262-3400. Or use the TIPS app at www.paramuspolice.org

Ehrenberg urged parents to remind their children:

1. Never accept rides, candy, gifts, money, etc., from strangers.

2. Never get close to cars occupied by people you don't know. Be careful if they call out to you to come closer for help or directions. It's easy for a stranger to pull you into a car if you get close enough. Don't be fooled by people who claim to know you or your parents. That does not mean that you know them.

3. Never give your name, address, phone number or any information about yourself to someone you do not know.

4. If you are home by yourself, don't open the door to anyone you do not know.

5. Notify police immediately about suspicious people or cars
