BCPD Officer Officer Dan Breslin arrested 18-year-old Thomas Malik and seized a .45-caliber pistol that dates back to 1911. with two magazines and 50 rounds of ammunition, as well as a .22-caliber Derringer (both in photo above).
Breslin heard an alert moments earlier following the crash on westbound Route 4 near Teaneck Road, Lt. James Mullin said.
He spotted the black Acura TJ with passenger-side damage a short distance down the highway, at River Road in Hackensack, and stopped it to investigate, the lieutenant said.
Approaching the car, Breslin smelled burnt pot from inside, then got consent from Malik to search it.
“The two firearms are not licensed, registered, or owned by driver and will be sent for ballistics testing to see if they have been used in previous crimes or if have been reported stolen,” Mullin said.
Malik was charged with:
- 2 counts of illegal possession of a firearm;
- Driving while intoxicated;
- Leaving the scene of an accident.
Additional charges were possible, Mullin said.
