Paul J. Giblin, 85, Of Paramus

PARAMUS, N.J. – Paul J. Giblin Sr., a resident of Paramus, died Monday, July 11. He was 85.

He was the son of the late Thomas Giblin and Catherine Giblin.

He attended Holy Trinity High School in Hackensack, where he was an outstanding athlete in both baseball and basketball. He graduated from Rutgers University and went on to attend Seton Hall Law School at night while working at Bendix to support his family.

He began his career as a shop steward at Bendix and found he wanted to continue to help unions through the law. He started his law firm, Giblin & Giblin in 1966 after graduating from Seton Hall School of Law. Early in his legal career, he was one of the foremost trial lawyers in New Jersey, with a number of his trials receiving nationwide news coverage.

During his esteemed career of more than 50 years, he served as counsel for municipalities, school boards and governmental agencies statewide. He also served as special labor adviser to former New Jersey Gov. Robert Meyner.

During his 50-year career as an attorney, he was honored with numerous awards, was a tireless advocate for civil rights and fought for the rights of the workers to unionize. He was widely considered an expert in negotiations and labor law.

He is survived by his wife Victoria; his children, Paul Jr., Brian and his wife Elisa, Kevin, Todd and his fiancé Kim Bargamento; grandchildren, Paul and Cristin Giblin, Chris and Janelle Sisco, Casey and Jacqueline Giblin, Christie and Michael Gonzalves, Brian Giblin Jr., Jennifer and Kevin Giblin; seven great-grandchildren; 21 nieces and nephews; sisters, Virginia Freeman, Patricia Craig, Anne Cirello, Mary Bacco, Ruth Sgambati; and brother Thomas Giblin.

Visitation and a funeral Mass will be conducted at a later date at Paramus Catholic High School, where he served as school counsel, as well as the attorney for the Consultative Board at Paramus Catholic High School.
