Neville G. Ottmann, 83, Of River Edge

RIVER EDGE, N.J. -- Neville G. Ottmann, of River Edge, died on Dec. 29. He was 83.

He was born and raised in Manhattan and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Harpur College (now SUNY Binghamton) in 1955. He was drafted into the army in 1955 and was transferred to Japan to be a radio operator. His time in the army was cut short by the death of his father. He went on to have a career as a teacher, guidance counselor and social worker, earning three master's degrees in social studies (City College), education (City College) and social work (Fordham University). He was a life-long learner and had a great appreciation for history, psychology and politics. He was a movie and sports buff and enjoyed attending plays and musicals. In his younger years, he was an avid runner, having run three New York City marathons and numerous half marathons, 10K and 5K races. He was very social and enjoyed family and friend get-togethers. He appreciated the support he was shown by his friends and family after the death of his wife.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer and her husband James Bieber; grandchildren, Thomas, Christian and Paige. 

He was predeceased by his wife Barbara (Gervasio); his sister, Barbara Schermerhorn; and his parents, James and Susan Ottmann.
