ORADELL, N.J. -- Matthew T. Armistead, a resident of Oradell, died Wednesday, Feb.24. He was 63.
He graduated in 1970 from St. Peter’s Preparatory High School in Jersey City, where he was an outstanding football player. He attended Villanova University and then became actively involved in his father’s mechanical construction business, The Armistead Corporation, where he was the first of the third generation to receive his New Jersey Master Plumbing License in 1977, which his father was very proud of him for accomplishing.
He had 44 years experience in the New Jersey Mechanical Construction industry having worked in his father’s business, The Armistead Corporation, for more than 25 years. After his father’s death in 1983, a shareholder’s dispute occurred (1984), which, after litigation, dissolved The Armistead Corporation in 1987. He established his own company, M&S Armistead Inc. Mechanical Contractors and worked diligently for 27 years before his recent illness. His company completed various types and sizes of Union Plumbing and HVAC projects for many schools, universities, hospitals and Fortune 500 companies in northern New Jersey. He also was a teacher at Eastwick College teaching the plumbing apprentice program at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Lyn Higgins; sons Matthew Jr. of Harrington Park and Daniel of Fair Lawn; grandsons Brandon and Hudson Armistead; his brother Stephen Armistead; and his hunting companion Theodore (Teddy).
He was predeceased by parents Robert Theodore Armistead and Bernice Ann Armistead.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday with a funeral service beginning at noon at the Volk-Leber Funeral, 268 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell.
