Dec. 14 marks the four-year anniversary of the shooting, which took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults in Newtown, Conn.
Victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting will also be honored.
The Bergen County Brady Chapter — formerly the Bergen County Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence — is taking part in the nationwide memorial.
This year's speakers include Representative-Elect Josh Gottheimer, New Jersey State Senator Loretta Weinberg, Anthony Cureton of the NAACP and Bergen Brady’s Dwight Panozzo.
Words of remembrance will also be shared by religious leaders including the church’s Reverend David Horst and Rabbi Jacob Lieberman of Temple Israel in Ridgewood.
Speakers will include Music will be provided by the church choir and soloist Frank Ortega.
Local organizations participating include:
- National Council of Jewish Women Bergen Chapter
- The Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County
- The Central Unitarian Church
- The Social Action Committee of Temple Emeth in Teaneck
- The Puffin Foundation
All continue to work for changes that will lessen the occurrence of mass murders as well as to reduce gun deaths in general.
According to their president, Ed Gross of Westwood, some good legislation has since passed into law, but the Brady Chapter believes that much remains to be done.
“It is our hope that a large turnout to honor the victims in Newtown will also help to highlight the continuing need for legislation," he said.
The Bergen County Brady Chapter, with approximately 1000 members, is a chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. It works in coalition with both faith and advocacy groups to push for the passage of bills that will make our communities safer.
The public is invited to attend at 7:30pm at the Central Unitarian Church in Paramus, 156 Forest Ave.
