Customers should be suspicious if they get a call from a person claiming to be with the company, then demanding payment with a pre-paid debit card, officials said. Also, be wary if a worker shows up at the door claiming to be sent by the company to "check a problem."
Company officials said they would never require one specific form of payment. If someone shows up at the door, ask for identification.
When in doubt, check with the company by calling (800) 436-PSEG. Also, call your local police department.
“We’ve seen a significant uptick in the number of scams being reported to us by customers,” said Greg Dunlap, vice president of customer operations for PSE&G. “The only way to protect against these scams is for customers to be cautious when contacted by someone seeking access to their home or demanding immediate payment. Even one customer being cheated is one too many.”
Phone scammers use scare tactics, company officials said, by threatening to cut off service if they aren't paid immediately. Be wary of any call like this, the company said.
