The Paramus Police Department called the hospital "in the middle of the night" when officers on patrol heard barking and whining coming from a truck parked behind Just Pups on Route 17, OAH's Director of Staff Development Nancy Miles told Daily Voice.
The hospital wasted no time, mobilizing a team of additional staff to evaluate all 67 puppies — right then and there.
"There were four that we were concerned about," Miles said. "They were exhibiting some signs of illness and have been undergoing medical treatment."
The rest were moved by animal control officers to a space where they won't be mingling with other animals, Miles said.
Shop owner Vincent LoSacco said there was nothing "illegal, inhumane or uncommon" about the setup. He told Daily Voice on Wednesday that the puppies were delivered overnight and would have been retrieved at 7 a.m. Monday.
Paramus authorities closed the Route 17 shop earlier Wednesday and issued nearly 400 summonses, Mayor Richard LaBarbiera said.
This came a day after Emerson officials issued violations at LoSacco's Kinderkamack Road store .
None of the rescues will be available for adoption until charges are resolved against LoSacco, who is being investigated by the Bergen County SPCA, authorities said.
