UPDATE: Blue Pearl officials told Daily Voice that leptospirosis is common in veterinary care and not something pet owners should be overly concerned about. There are vaccines to treat it, though they are not mandatory.

The five dogs with confirmed cases at Blue Pearl were being treated for symptoms leptospirosis — a rare bacterial infection ultimately leading to organ failure — when they were diagnosed, officials confirmed. The patients did not contract the illness from the facility.
Three of the five dogs died because of the infection.
Pet owners should keep an eye out for shivering, lack of appetite, rapid dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea.
