The Health Professions Integrated Teaching Center is a $25.5 million 63,000-square-foot facility that will provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for more than 1,000 students a year. Simulation laboratories -- labor and delivery, an emergency room and ambulatory pediatrics among them -- and SMART classrooms will enhance the learning experience and better prepare students.

On its first floor, a 24-chair dental clinic will give students the clinical practice hours they need -- and provide the community with a low-cost oral healthcare option.

In 2012, state voters approved a referendum to deliver $750 million to New Jersey's colleges and universities, to construct new academic facilities that would spur the region's economic development. Bergen's project is its Health Professions Integrated Teaching Center.

Healthcare represents the number-one employment sector in Bergen County -- a workforce that includes six hospitals and more than 70,000 jobs. Nearly 470 students graduated from Bergen's health professions programs last year. The college noted that most graduates are employed directly after graduation, and vet tech graduates have a 100 percent job placement rate.

The college offers nine health professions certificate and degree programs, including diagnostic medical sonography, medical office assistant and nursing, and eight non-credit certification programs, including certified home health aide, certified pharmacy technician and medical coding and billing specialist.

The May 17 event will include a ribbon-cutting, remarks from College and local officials and tours. The ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. on the Main Campus, 400 Paramus Rd., in Paramus.
