The nonprofit organization has raised more than $126,000 with a goal of reaching $428,780. Funds will support educational workshops and training seminars for caregivers and research opportunities.
“The fact that the dollars help to support local programs and services as well as public policy efforts creates this opportunity for people to come together and raise awareness about the disease,” President and CEO of the Greater New Jersey Chapter Kenneth C. Zaentz said.
“The caregiver is the second person affected by Alzheimer’s and may predecease the person they’re caring for due to stress related issues.
A lot of times, caregivers don’t get to do anything for themselves… and become isolated from their friends and the things they used to do. That’s not healthy either.”
The national nonprofit organization’s caregiver support groups are places for them to connect and develop friendships with people going through the same thing.
“Unfortunately, this is a disease that has no survivors,” Zaentz said. “It’s a fundraiser and we couldn’t do what we do without charitable contributions but at the same time, [the walk] provides an opportunity for this disease to get noticed.
“For people to be a voice for those who no longer have a voice for themselves.”
