PARAMUS, N.J. – BounceU of Paramus is offering a “structured, goal-directed, dynamic and effective” therapy program designed to aid children with special needs.

The Sensory Bounce Therapy Program is run by an occupational or speech therapist working with children at various inflatable bounce locations, according to a statement. Attendees are expected to experience “the intense sensory input they need in a natural, social environment.”

Miriam Skydell, founder of Sensory Bounce, said the program combines her love for children with her personal understanding of parents struggling to find the necessary therapies for a special needs child, according to the statement.

As part of the program, children bounce on inflatables, move through obstacle courses, climb through mazes and play sports, according to the statement, which said that parents simultaneously have access to a free support group.

"I wanted to create a support group for parents as a natural outcome of the kids being in a class" said Skydell, who designed the program based on her years of occupational therapy experience. "Having to find childcare to attend a support group only increases stress on the parents of a special needs child."

Designed for children ages 3-11, the program is geared toward children with autism or who may appear to be on the autism spectrum, those living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), those having problems with social skills, those with low muscle tone, those with gross motor and balance difficulties and those with motor planning difficulties, according to the statement.

According to the statement, Skydell first began her sensory therapy program at the Paramus BounceU in 2013. In the years, since, she’s taken the program to 16 other locations across five states. Each session has a 1:2 adult-to-child ratio. So far this year, the program has served more than 150 children in Paramus, organizers said.
