William Andujar, 52, of Whiting, was sentenced on Friday, Mar. 8 to five years in state prison, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release. He pleaded guilty on Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, to aggravated assault and received a four-year sentence. Andujar was given an additional year for violating his parole.

Investigators said Andujar was heading west on West Pinewald-Keswick Road in a 2010 Honda CRV at around 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, 2020. His SUV rear-ended a 2003 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 44-year-old woman from South Toms River.

Both vehicles were knocked off the road and into a wooded area. Andujar and the other driver were rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The woman was eventually discharged but is still recovering from her injuries, prosecutors said. A search warrant was obtained for a draw of Andujar's blood.

Andujar's blood alcohol concentration was .18 and the laboratory results also detected a "significant quantity" of methadone in his system. He was arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, and he has been held in the Ocean County Jail.

Andujar will have to serve more than four years of his sentence before he can be eligible for parole under the No Early Release Act.
