UPDATE: A blaze that burned through much of the weekend in the Ramapo Mountains wasn't the usual run-of-the-mill forest fire. The fire, which continued to smolder late Saturday afternoon well into Sunday, was on a notorious 570-acre expanse of property in Pompton Lakes considered one of New Jersey's most polluted. Toxic substances that were dumped from what was a munitions plant on the DuPont site from 1902 to 1994 leached into the groundwater, creating an underground vapor of cancer-causing solvents. UPDATE (Saturday, Nov. 19): The search for a missing Mahwah man ended with the discovery of his body deep into one of the area's largest parks, Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton confirmed. A hiker discovered the body of Hector Zamorano, 41, off the yellow trail at the Ramapo Valley Reservation around noontime Saturday, Nov. 19, said the sheriff, whose department is handling the investigation. Nearly half-a-dozen New Jersey state parks were closed after reaching capacity this weekend. Residents eager for fresh air flocked to the state's parks and golf courses bright and early Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17 -- the third weekend since Gov. Bergen County officials closed the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah until further notice after a woman and a dog were injured in separate coyote attacks Saturday.
