Murphy made the announcement in a four-minute autobiographical video, telling her life story while also highlighting her priorities as first lady, including reducing the state's maternal mortality rate and combating climate change. "I am so proud of everything we've accomplished but I know …

A new Rochelle Park police officer still in field training made a drug arrest after stopping a driver from Bogota who failed to scrape snow from this week's storm off his car, authorities said. Officer Chris Kiszka, who recently transferred from the Jersey City Police Department, stopped the vehicle on Essex Street around 8:30 p.m. Thursday for several violations, Detective Lt. James M. DePreta said. These included violating a state law that requires owners to remove all ice and snow from their vehicles before driving, especially from the hood, windows and roof. NJ Man Arrested For Selling Heroin, Coke Hours After Parole Release Under Murphy COVID Law
A Sussex County man was arrested for selling heroin and crack cocaine, just hours after being released from parole supervision last week, authorities said. Leighton A. Brown, 42, of Newton, was arrested at his home last Wednesday, and charged with distribution of heroin and crack cocaine, as well as selling CDS within 1,000 feet of a school zone, police said. Brown was released from parole supervision on Nov. 4, under Gov. Murphy’s COVID-19 law that reduced and ended parole time, police said. He was being held at Morris County Jail in accordance with the Criminal Justice Reform Act. …

Free NJ Narcan Giveaway: No ID Or Script Needed
New Jersey will offer the opioid overdose-reversal drug Narcan for free at pharmacies later this month, authorities announced Wednesday. But be warned: Health and law enforcement professionals emphasize that nalaxone isn't a miracle drug or fallback option. Opioid users can still die depending on how much is in their system and in what combination. State residents can obtain a packet containing two doses of the nasal spray anonymously without a prescription or appointment from Sept. 24 to Sept. 26, Gov. Murphy and Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson said. The free doses will be avai…

19 Unemployment: Will $300 Weekly Benefit Pass?
The number of New Jersey residents who have applied for unemployment benefits has surged to more than 1.5 million since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The CARES Act gave workers an extra $600 per week, but expired at July’s end. President Trump’s executive order calling for a new $400 weekly benefit was signed last month. Gov. Murphy then applied for the FEMA Lost Wages Supplemental Assistance Program, the expanded benefit, requesting funding for the weeks of Aug. 1, 8 and 15. If approved, New Jersey residents will receive $300 rather than $400 because the state was already paying wor…

Cuban Pete's In Montclair Issued Violation For Serving Food Inside
Cuban Pete's in Montclair was issued a violation for serving food indoors, authorities said. The popular Bloomfield Avenue eatery was one of three Executive Order violations reported over the weekend, Col. Pat Callahan of the New Jersey State Police said during Monday's COVID-19 briefing. Restaurants in the Garden State are currently only allowed to serve and sell food through outdoor dining, takeout and delivery. Montclair police got a tip that the restaurant had been serving food indoors in violation of Gov. Murphy's Executive Order that bans indoor dining, Callahan said. Cuban Pet…

#NJThanksYou: Wyckoff Girl Scout Troop, Postal Workers Among Those Honored At Murphy’s Briefing
Wyckoff Girl Scout Troop 24 in Bergen County and postal workers across the state were among local heroes honored by Gov. Murphy Friday. The troop made their own headbands for healthcare workers at The Valley Hospital to wear under their masks, reduce discomfort and “make life on the job just a little bit better.” Japanese-headquartered retailer Uniqlo was also honored for its generous donation of 100,000 medical-grade masks for front line public health and safety responders. “This is the essence of what it means to be a good corporate citizen, and we are incredibly appreciative,” Murp…

19 Approach Be More Aggressive In Bergen County Than Rest Of NJ?
Bergen County Executive James Tedesco has been one step ahead of the rest of the state in the COVID-19 fight since its first confirmed case two weeks ago. On Monday, Tedesco announced a new executive order that would impose a more aggressive action in Bergen than those effected by Gov. Murphy for the rest of the state. Then, on Thursday, Murphy told Tedesco to rescind his order. With the number of cases highest in Bergen County, should the county have its own set of rules?

19 Guidelines
Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal on Monday issued guidelines that law enforcement agencies across New Jersey must follow to protect the public – themselves – from the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Grewal also asked police to consider delaying criminal charges in cases that “do not imminently impact public safety” and requested that prosecutors demand defendants be held in jail pending trial only in the most serious cases. At the same time, he said, “public safety and victim safety must remain the priority in any such decision.” “Notwithstanding any court closures, law enforcement of…

: Rain Tax In New Jersey -- Are You For It?
As if the rain and taxes weren't bad enough in New Jersey, they both could get worse. A new bill, now headed to Gov. Murphy's desk, would allow municipalities to create utilities to collect fees from business and homeowners with large paved surfaces. Rainwater mixes with pollutants on those surfaces during storms before running into drainage areas during storms, and funding could be used for upgrades to reduce environmental impact. “With all the salt that we’ve had on roads recently, that’s all running into the sewer systems, so you can’t ignore the problems because they d…

A former Passaic councilman who was hired by Gov. Murphy even though he served federal prison time for taking bribes has resigned amid a firestorm of controversy. At the same time, state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal -- a former federal prosecutor himself -- said he's ordered an investigation into how Marcellus Jackson was able to get the job in the first place. Other people with criminal records who've been hired by the state will be forced to resign, as well, and steps will be taken to prevent it from happening again, the attorney general said. In a statement issued early Friday even…
