Forty-one fugitives including 12 with gang affiliations were captured during a five-day sweep across Essex County, authorities announced Monday, Oct. 24. Four of the fugitives were wanted for homicide, while others were wanted on a range of felonies ranging from drug possession to aggravated assault, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. A suspect was at-large after a 3-month-old infant was found inside of an abandoned Mercedes Benz SUV with a Texas plate in Newark on Tuesday, Oct. 18, authorities say. A 33-year-old pilot was pulled from his helicopter after a crash at the Essex County Airport Saturday, June 4, police said. The pilot was taking off and heading to pick up a private charter when the a 2015 Bell Model 407 began spinning around 100 to 150 feet in the air around noon, Fairfield police said. A pilot and his two passengers escaped uninjured when the plane they were flying in ran off a runway and crashed at the Essex County Airport on Easter Sunday, authorities said. The 2020 Citation CJ3 Plus was found at the end of Runway 22 in a drainage brook around 2:40 p.m., Fairfield police said.
