UPDATE: Police were justified in shooting a New Jersey man seen on bodycam video charging at an officer with a knife, a grand jury investigation required by state law found. Luke Mendez, 26, had his wrapped around the knife handle as he barreled down the steps of an Old Bridge home last April 24. A man was airlifted to the hospital after falling from a residential deck in Hillsdale while watching Monday's solar eclipse, authorities said. The 50-year-old victim fell 10 feet from a deck without a railing while watching the Monday afternoon eclipse on Knickerbocker Road off Riverdale Street, Hillsdale Police Chief Sean Smith said. An SUV plowed into the main entrance of Ridgefield's Company 1 firehouse early Monday evening. The Asian driver, who was alone in the Lexus RX 350, said the brakes failed. Frozen Hydrants Challenge Firefighters In Wanaque Basement Blaze Ignited By Lithium Battery
A Wanaque homeowner required EMS attention for smoke inhalation after a lithium battery ignited a fierce basement fire, authorities said. The basement on Ramapo Mountain Drive was fully involved when firefighters arrived shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, they said. Frozen hydrants left the first two engines just about tapped, with the blaze extending to the first floor, when mutual aid came through, responders said. That included firefighters from Pompton Lakes, Ringwood and Bloomingdale. A Passaic County hazardous materials unit also was requested.

A smoky house fire in Passaic went to four alarms the day after Christmas. No injuries were immediately reported in the blaze, which ignited in a Van Buren Street home near Central Avenue around 11 a.m., Passaic Mayor Hector Carlos Lora said. A homeless day laborer from Palisades Park deliberately kicked a female EMT in the face as an ambulance took him to the hospital for alcohol treatment, authorities said. Police said they called the ambulance for Xavier Contreras, 41, under the provisions of a state law known as the Alcohol Treatment and Rehabilitation Act (ATRA). Guardian angels come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Three of them were all wearing blue one steamy day last summer when an infant suddenly stopped breathing in Cresskill. Two people were hospitalized following a head-on crash in Morris County, authorities said. The Long Valley First Aid Squad responded to the crash with EMS and Rescue 1 and 2 in Long Valley during the afternoon on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Long Valley Fire Company No. 1 tended to a fluid spill while EMS crew members treated two patients at the scene and transported them to nearby hospitals, the squad said. An EMT who was injured in a fall while working at Mountain Creek reportedly settled a lawsuit against the resort for $1.75 million.
