NORWOOD, N.J. — If you're going to be a creative, you might as well be glamorous, figures Marlena Starr McMahon, who has made her retail fashion boutique unique with high-profile events that cater to kids while pleasing their parents.

Fashion Camp on Livingston Street centers on upcycled fashion for women, tweens and girls, inspirational jewelry and 1980s-styled accessories.

All are invited to design, decorate, and model their own lace, glitter and heat-pressed pieces -- while the dads hang out enjoying appetizers and refreshments that include wine and beer.

In fact, the shop on Saturday, Oct. 17, will announce five winners of a design contest co-sponsored by Glossy Chic of New York.

“We’re like a fashion experience with indulgence,” said McMahon, who launched the business with the help of neighbors, family and friends nearly two years ago.

A mother of three and former athlete, she was inspired by the fashion sense of her oldest daughter, 10-year-old Micayla.

“I believe in a true sense of community, creating something here, and being very present in my kids’ lives,” said McMahon, whose husband, Michael, operates McMahon Publishing Group -- the second-largest family owned medical publishing company.

“Other places have design studios," she said, "but we have the bling bar, wireless microphones and a runway. There is no other brick and mortar boutique like this in Norwood.”

"My kid and her friends had a blast decorating," customer Adrienne Miller said. "It's so different than crafting. I want to come back here for the women's nights out."

“I had my kid’s birthday party here,” said store manager Sherri Carter. "I love [McMahon's] concept and her ideas blow me away.

"No matter what size, or color, we celebrate kids."
