Residents Evacuated When Elizabeth Building Begins To Collapse Firefighters in Elizabeth were called into action when a building in the city started to collapse Wednesday, the department said in a statement.  A vacant lot next door to 245 Union St. was being excavated when one side of the three-story, multi-family building began to crumble. A large crack formed on the side nearest the lot and pieces of the structure began to slide off,. according to photos from the scene.  Deputy 3, Battalion 3 and Battalion 5, as well as Elizabeth police, helped evacuate the building and to establish a collapse zone.  There were no reported injuries.&n…

Monday night rush-hour traffic was backed up to the George Washington Bridge. The crack in the pipe, which connects basins at the median to the right shoulder, created a hole between the two left lanes. Drivers were urged to take alternate routes. Firefighters "were met with heavy smoke and an activated sprinkler head," the borough fire department said. Crews stretched a hose line into the building, located the source of the fire and extinguished it, the department said. No injuries were reported. Responders Clear Roofing Glue Fumes From HackensackUMC At Pascack UPDATE: Firefighters used fans to clear noxious fumes Saturday from a section of HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley caused by chemicals used in roofing glue. Workers were working on a roof of the hospital on Old Hook Road in Westwood when the incident occurred, sickening several people. Police, firefighters and a Bergen County hazardous materials unit were summoned just after 12:30 p.m. Ramsey Rescue sent the decontamination unit in case any workers or others were exposed to the chemicals. Ambulances were also put on standby before it was determined that evacuations weren't necessary.
